The Rimondi Fountain

Reconstructed in 1626, using the foundations of an older fountain to cover a part of the city’s needs in water supply, the Rimondi fountain was commissioned by the Venetian governor of Rethymno, Alvise Rimondi, bearing his name ever since. It consists of three basins and three elaborate lion head springs from where water runs, framed by columns in Corinthian order style that support an architrave engraved with the Latin phrase “Liberalitatis Fontes”, meaning “generous springs”, or “offered for free springs”.

The Neratze Mosque

Initially, a catholic monastery of the Augustinian monks, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the site was transformed into a mosque in 1657 during Ottoman rule, taking the name "Gazi Houssein", or "Neratze". Nowadays, the Neratze mosque hosts the local musical conservatory, holding many musical performances and events.
